Imagine the outdoor toys you could store in a 6,200-square-foot blimp hangar next to your house. A World War II-era structure built to shelter a small, steerable airship and now equipped with a cocktail bar is just one perk of a 73-acre horse estate in North Plains for sale at $4.5 million.
The forested property at 23930 N.W. Hansen Road is a half-hour drive to the Portland metropolitan area, but a world away from urban life.
In addition to the wood-framed hangar, a private, creek-fed lake offers a place for swimming and kayaking, and a yurt hideout allows for relaxing and trout fishing off the dock.
Two zip lines are ready for adventure seekers to glide over grass and across the lake. An outdoor kitchen has an Italian-style pizza oven, and patios and paths lead to the pool and pool house, multiple fire pits and a bocce ball arena.
“Escape to this one-of-a-kind oasis,” says listing broker Tracy Hasson with Nicole Hasson Imatani, both of Cascade Hasson Sotheby’s International Realty. There are also miles of groomed horse-riding, hiking and ATV trails.
The two-level, contemporary house has metal siding and shed roofs, and 3,165 square feet of living space. Fold-away glass doors open to outdoor entertainment spaces and views of the lake and pastures.
The 21-foot-long living room benefits from a double-height ceiling, expansive windows and a custom hanging wood-burning fireplace.
The high-end kitchen has quartz and concrete counters, custom cabinets, a dedicated coffee station and wine cooler plus a pantry. Descend steps to the temperature-controlled wine cellar that can store more than 600 bottles.
The primary suite on the garden level has a view of the lake, an office space and a walk-in closet with built-in storage. The glass-wall shower with multiple shower heads is visible from the sleeping area. Heated tile floors are under the floating vanities and soaking tub.
The residence has four more bedrooms and two more bathrooms, and there are three powder rooms outside, including one in the pool house.
Decks are made of Ipe wood and concrete. Energy efficient features include geothermal heat pumps for air temperature heating and cooling and water heaters. There is an attached two-car garage.
The original 1946 ranch house has been updated and remade into guest quarters and an art studio, with 2,218 square feet of living space. Low ceilings were removed to create vaulted ceilings with exposed beams and a loft.
Acres of the property’s timberland are protected in Washington County’s Exclusive Forest and Conservation District, which allows for renewable forest resource production, retention of water resources, recreation, agriculture and other related or compatible uses, as defined by Oregon’s Land Conservation and Development Department.
Current property taxes are under $7,000 a year, reduced by a special “timber tax deferral” assessment.
The North Plains hangar was dismantled, reconfigured and moved to the property decades ago, and the current owners preserved and restored it as a classic car salon and game room. It’s a scaled-down version of the surviving hangar built in 1943 to house K-class airships used for anti-submarine patrol and convoy escort at the former Naval Air Station Tilllamook, now the Tillamook Air Museum.
“The photos of the property don’t do it justice,” says Tracy Hasson. “You have to see it to believe it.” Potential buyers must submit a letter of a pre-approval of a mortgage or proof of funds to tracy.hasson@cascadehassonsir.com to arrange a private showing.
