Shot putter Ryan Crouser, distance runner Raevyn Rogers, marathoner Galen Rupp and steeplechaser Courtney Frerichs are a few of the 22 athletes with ties to Oregon and southwest Washington who are set to compete for Team USA at the World Athletics Championships Oregon22 later this month at Hayward Field in Eugene.
USA Track & Field on Tuesday announced a roster of 151 athletes for the world championships, which run July 15-24.
Most of the athletes named to Team USA earned their spots by finishing in the top three in their events during last month’s USATF Outdoor Championships, which also were in Eugene. But in some cases, athletes who finished in the top three but had not achieved a world championship standard in their event were left off the roster in favor of athletes who either had achieved the standard or held a higher world ranking.
In the men’s 1,500 meters, for example, former Oregon Ducks standout Johnny Gregorek finished sixth at the USA championships but made the roster over second-place finisher Jonathan Davis. Gregorek will join former UO star Cooper Teare and Bowerman Track Club’s Josh Thompson in representing the U.S. in the event at Oregon22.
Other Oregon athletes on Team USA for worlds are: Devon Allen (men’s 110 hurdles), Donavan Brazier (men’s 800), Stephanie Casey (women’s 35k race walk), Elise Cranny (women’s 5,000), Grant Fisher (men’s 5,000, 10,000), Evan Jager (men’s 3,000 steeplechase), Alaysha Johnson (women’s 100 hurdles), Sinclaire Johnson (women’s 1,500), Woody Kincaid (men’s 5,000), Kyree King (men’s 4×100 relay pool), Sean McGorty (men’s 10,000), Jenna Prandini (women’s 200) and Karissa Schweizer (women’s 5,000, 10,000).
Dan Nehnevaj (men’s 20k race walk) and Kara Winger (women’s javelin), who each have ties to Vancouver, also are on Team USA.
Allyson Felix was named to the mixed 4×400 relay pool, meaning the 36-year-old will be appearing at her 10th world championships. Felix ranks No. 1 all-time with 18 world championship medals.
Nine athletes earned automatic spots because they are 2019 world champions. They are: Nia Ali (women’s 100 hurdles), Brazier, Christian Coleman (men’s 100), Grant Holloway (men’s 110 hurdles), Joe Kovacs (men’s shot put), Noah Lyles (men’s 200), Dalilah Muhammad (women’s 400 hurdles), DeAnna Price (women’s hammer) and Christian Taylor (men’s triple jump).
Three others — Valarie Allman (women’s discus), Michael Cherry (men’s 400) and Maggie Ewen (women’s shot put) — picked up byes into Oregon22 by winning the 2021 Diamond League overall title in their event. Heptathlete Kendell Williams also received a bye into the world championships after winning the World Athletics Combined Events Tour.
