U-Haul driver strikes and kills pedestrian, blocks MAX trains in Gresham

A woman walking on East Burnside Street in Gresham was struck and killed by a U-Haul truck driver Monday afternoon, police said.

Officers responded to reports of the crash in the 16800 block of East Burnside Street around 2:50 p.m., police said in a news release. They arrived to find a U-Haul truck on the MAX light rail tracks, causing trains to stop in both directions.

A woman, whose identity has not yet been released, was taken to a hospital by ambulance with critical injuries but succumbed to her injuries shortly after, police said.

The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with officers, police said.

Westbound traffic on Burnside Street was temporarily closed off, and drivers were asked to avoid the area between 162nd and 172nd Avenues.

All lanes were reopened just after 5:30 p.m., and MAX trains were expected to resume shortly, police said.

Police ask anyone who witnessed the collision to call the Gresham Police at 503-618-2719.
