Portland Trail Blazers’ forward Justise Winslow underwent successful left ankle surgery Wednesday at Atrium Health Mercy in Charlotte, N.C., the franchise announced.
Winslow, the Blazers said, is expected to be ready for the 2023-24 season. He will become an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
The Blazers, with eight players on their injury list, signed guard Skylar Mays to a 10-day contract, a source has confirmed to The Oregonian/OregonLive.
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski first reported the signing.
Mays, out of LSU, most recently averaged 19.2 points and 6.1 assists in 16 games for Mexico City. A second-round pick to Atlanta in 2020, Mays played 61 games for the Hawks averaging 3.3 points on 46.9% shooting.
Under the NBA’s hardship rules, the Blazers were allowed to sign an additional player to the roster even though Mays pushed the team’s roster to 16, one above the 15-player limit.
Winslow sprained his ankle Dec. 21 during a loss at Oklahoma City and hasn’t played since. Following the All-Star break, Winslow received a second opinion on his ankle and on March 10 underwent a bone marrow procedure.
The procedure involved obtaining his bone marrow from an area of his body and then injecting it into the injured area in hopes that it will help accelerate the healing process.
Following a recent reevaluation, Winslow underwent season-ending surgery.
In 29 games this season, Winslow has averaged 6.8 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.4 assists.
Winslow’s surgery was performed by Dr. Robert Anderson, MD of OrthoCarolina to address joint instability.
