Earl and Hilda Jones planted a half-acre of albariño at Abacela Winery, Roseburg, in 2000. The vines they placed on the north side of Cobblestone Hill were Oregon’s first commercial albariño planting.
Earl Jones wasn’t exactly brimming with confidence at the time. “I expected it to fail because even the north side of our hills are warmer and certainly drier than in Galicia,” Jones said. Fortunately for white wine lovers everywhere, the experiment succeeded.
