Oregon’s U.S. senators have sent six names to the White House to consider for an upcoming vacancy when U.S. District Judge Marco A. Hernandez moves to senior status next year.
The finalists — two Multnomah County judges, a federal magistrate judge and three lawyers — were selected by a committee of Oregon lawyers chosen by Democratic Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley. The committee reviewed applicants’ qualifications and interviewed the finalists.
They are: Multnomah County Circuit Judge Amy Baggio, attorneys Nadia Dahab, Kevin Díaz and Monica Goracke, U.S. Magistrate Judge Mustafa Kasubhai and Multnomah County Circuit Judge Katherine von Ter Stegge.
Dahab formerly served as a senior litigation attorney for the Portland nonprofit Innovation Law Lab, representing immigrants and refugees. Díaz is general counsel for the group Compassion & Choices, which works to improve care for people charting the end of their lives, after previously serving as legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Oregon. Goracke heads the Oregon Law Center, a nonprofit that provides free legal help to low-income people.
