The perfect storm of cold air, strong sun and forceful wind created five fleeting, but captivating, waterspouts on the Oregon coast off Rockaway Beach Monday morning, causing the National Weather Service to tweet about the whirling columns of air and remind people to stay safe.
“Waterspouts here typically aren’t as strong as those seen east of the Rockies, but if you see one, don’t approach it,” says Shawn Weagley of the National Weather Service’s Portland office. “It’s best to get indoors and in an interior room in case it comes onshore as a tornado.”
