Food Front, a cooperative grocery that has served Northwest Portland for more than 50 years, will close at noon on Monday, its directors announced in a letter posted to the store’s website over the weekend.
The decision comes less than a week after the store’s board told co-op members that grim finances could cause the store to close permanently 51 years after first opening its doors in the Nob Hill neighborhood. As previously reported by The Oregonian/OregonLive, the co-op laid off a third of its staff earlier this month, and directors said there was not enough cash on hand to restock the inventory on its shelves.
