The sun was nearly setting at Jane Sanders Stadium, but the Burns/Crane softball team was able to beat Scio 1-0 in a 12-inning marathon for the OSAA Class 3A state championship on Friday night.
In a pitcher’s duel between the two teams, it was Burns’ Macy Temple breaking up the defense while scoring on an error in the top of the 12th inning for the state championship.
But the main event of the game was the pitcher’s duel, which included Burns’ Ayla Davies and Scio’s Myleigh Cooper. Davies ended the game with 23 strikeouts while allowing three hits and walking three. It’s a new state record, which was previously 22 set by Tigard’s MaKenna Reid last season.
Cooper struck out 16 Burns batters while allowing three hits and walking two while not allowing any earned runs.
Burns’ season ends with a 29-0 record, and its second state championship in a row.
Scio’s season ends with a 24-1 record. The Loggers had never been to the state championship prior to Friday.
