Despite facing its largest crowds since the start of the pandemic, Portland International Airport saw relatively few delays or cancellations during July Fourth weekend, officials said.
According to figures released Sunday by the Transportation Security Administration, approximately 9.18 million passengers passed through security at airports in the United States between Thursday and Sunday, just shy of the 9.41 million screened during the same period in 2019. Friday broke a single-day record for air travel during the pandemic, with nearly 2.5 million people taking to the skies.
But in Portland, cancellations remained low. By 2 p.m. Monday, zero flights going into or out of Portland International Airport had been reported canceled, according to figures from the Port of Portland. On Sunday, five flights were canceled. On Saturday, three. The number of daily flights hovers between 300 and 500.
Nationally, travelers have faced hundreds of cancellations and thousands of delays as airlines have struggled to keep up with surging demand amid staffing shortages and an assortment of other issues. Sunday alone brought 656 cancellations and nearly 6,000 delays, according to tracking site FlightAware.
