Double Mountain Brewery Celebrates 8 Years in Woodstock and the Return of the Heirloom Pie

    Double Mountain Heirloom Pie

It’s heirloom tomato harvest season and with that comes the annual return of the highly coveted Heirloom Pie at Double Mountain Brewery & Cidery beginning on Friday, August 16th. But this year will be a bit different as Double Mountain decided to grow its own heirloom tomatoes on some of its land adjacent to its warehouse, just south of Hood River, Oregon.

The idea of growing its own heirloom tomatoes came from one of the brewery’s longest tenured employees, Silvia. She decided to ask Double Mountain’s owner, Matt Swihart, why the brewery doesn’t grow its own heirloom tomatoes for its popular seasonal pizza on its own unused land?

According to the brewery, Silvia asked the following. “Matt, how about we turn that empty field by the warehouse into a farm and grow our own heirloom tomatoes right here?” This intrigued Swihart enough that he gathered a few other employees and decided to take the chance and allow his team to also become tomato farmers.

After getting the land prepped, complete with irrigation, the heirloom tomatoes were raised from seed and then planted. Then for many months the tomatoes were nurtured and tended to to allow for the best tasting heirlooms available. Now it’s heirloom tomato harvest season and in just a few days, the Heirloom Pie will make its triumphant return to all three Double Mountain Brewery locations.

If you’re not familiar with this coveted pizza, it is one to seek out. The brewery’s Heirloom Pie features a base of fresh basil walnut pesto and mozzarella and fontal cheese. Once baked, it is topped with local heirloom tomatoes and is finished with pecorino and parmigiano. Damn this is so tasty!! Just don’t delay as once the tomatoes are gone, so is the seasonal pie!
