An armed-robbery suspect fleeing police caused a 5-car crash that killed a woman and injured three other people Sunday in Northeast Portland, police said.
The suspect sped west on Northeast Glisan Street at about 6:11 p.m. after a Gresham police officer, noting that the driver’s car matched the description of one allegedly involved in a rash of robberies, began following it near Northeast 181st Avenue and Glisan, according to the Portland Police Bureau.
The fleeing car, traveling “at a high rate of speed,” crashed into a parked car and another vehicle that had two people in it. A woman in the latter car died in the crash, and the other person in the vehicle was seriously injured, police said.
The suspect’s car then caromed into eastbound traffic, striking two more cars, before finally coming to a stop. The two occupants of one of the cars that was struck drove themselves to a nearby hospital, police said.
The suspect, whose name has not been released yet, was taken into custody. No charges have been announced.
An investigation is ongoing. Police ask anyone who might have information about the case to contact crimetips@police.portlandoregon.gov.
