Maligned for much of the past two seasons, Oregon’s starting pitching has been what has held it back from ascending to a national power. Jace Stoffal delivered not only the best outing of his career, but one of the best in the last decade for the Ducks, who took the series opener against Oregon State and extended their win streak to 11.
Stoffal tied a career-best with nine strikeouts and allowed just one hit and three walks over 7.0 shutout innings to lead No. 25 Oregon to a 2-0 win over Oregon State Friday night at PK Park.
It was the fewest hits allowed over at least 7.0 scoreless innings by an Oregon pitcher since Tommy Thorpe threw 7.0 hitless innings with five walks and five strikeouts against Utah on May 24, 2013. UO has had only five other pitching performances
Oregon (20-7, 7-3 Pac-12) broke the pitching duel in the fifth. Gavin Grant hit a one-out double to the corner in right and two batters later Colby Shade singled him in. Sabin Ceballos hit a two-out double to left to make it 2-0.
Trent Sellers allowed two runs on five hits and two walks and struck out eight over 4.2 innings for Oregon State (18-11, 5-8).
