A four-alarm fire at the May Apartments, located at Southwest 14th Avenue and Taylor Street, was fully extinguished Wednesday after it displaced at least 100 people. But a partial collapse of the 1912 building and other risks are still being evaluated by Portland firefighters ahead of this weekend’s Portland Timbers and Thorns matches, leading to multiple street closures three blocks southeast of Providence Park.
As of Saturday morning, roads around the burned apartment building are still closed. This includes Southwest 14th Avenue from Salmon to Yamhill streets, and Southwest Taylor Street from 13th to 15th avenues.
The Timbers face Minnesota United at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, and the Thorns host the Chicago Red Stars at 2 p.m. Sunday. Barring additional guidance from Portland Fire & Rescue, the aforementioned roads are expected to be closed through the weekend with no through traffic or parking allowed, so plan your trip to both matches accordingly.
There should be no additional impact to the parking or traffic situation around Providence Park, a PTFC spokesperson said. The MAX Blue and Red lines with stops at Providence Park are fully operational.
A GoFundMe for the tenants displaced by the fire can be found here.
