In their new book, A Quick Drink: The Speed Rack Guide to Winning Cocktails for Any Mood, authors Lynnette Marrero and Ivy Mix (with Megan Krigbaum) spotlight the recipes of competitors and winners from their all-women bartending competition, such as Speed Rack national USA winner Haley Traub. When she competed in 2018, Traub was prompted to create an espresso martini variation inspired by a loved one. She immediately thought of her grandmother, a three-time breast cancer survivor, and her mom’s Black Forest trifle dessert. For her rendition of the modern classic, she replaced the vodka with bourbon, added tart cherry juice, and complemented the warm baking spices of the spirit with vanilla demerara syrup and chocolate shavings.
