The Multnomah County Animal Shelter will now require all animals that severely bite a person to spend 10 days in quarantine at the Troutdale facility after county officials lost track of a dog that mauled a Portland runner earlier this week.
Since at least 2016, the shelter has allowed owners to quarantine such pets in their homes if investigating officers determine that the owner can safely maintain the animal, said county spokesperson Julie Sullivan-Springhetti. State health codes require the 10-day quarantine to give officials time to determine whether an animal has rabies.
