The Houston Texans need an upgrade at quarterback. There are plenty of quarterbacks available in the 2023 NFL draft.
Alabama’s Bryce Young is expected to go to the Carolina Panthers with the No. 1 pick. The Texans currently have the second overall pick, and they are expected to select a quarterback, possibly Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud.
Or will they?
Texans’ general manager Nick Caserio said he’s been receiving offers to trade the No. 2 pick and he’s listening.
“Are we open for business? We’re open to listening,” Caserio told reporters Tuesday.
New head coach DeMeco Ryans was the defensive coordinator with the San Francisco 49ers before coming to Houston and they could opt for a defensive presence in the form of Alabama edge rusher Will Anderson Jr. or Texas Tech defensive lineman Tyree Wilson.
There’s talk the Texans and Indianapolis Colts, at No. 4 could be interested in swapping picks and adding defensive lineman DeForest Buckner to the deal. Buckner would be reunited with Ryans, who was on the 49ers’ staff during Buckner’s first four seasons in the NFL.
The Texans, who currently have journeyman Case Keenum and Davis Mills at quarterback on the roster, could be looking to 2024 when USC’s Caleb Williams he won the 2022 Heisman Trophy – and North Carolina’s Drake Maye will be available. However, for the Texans to pass on Stroud would be a major risk for a quarterback-needy franchise.
