A redshirt-freshman defensive lineman will be transferring from Oregon.
Sir Mells is expected to enter the transfer portal, according to a source with knowledge of the matter.
Mells, who had a pass breakup while playing in one game and redshirting last season, is not listed on the rosters for UO’s spring game. He has four years of eligibility remaining.
His departure will leave UO with 82 projected scholarship players for the fall, including 10 interior defensive linemen.
A three-star prospect out of Liberty High School in Las Vegas, Mells was ranked No. 1,013 overall and the No. 135 defensive lineman in the 2022 recruiting class, according to the 247Sports Composite. He’ll become the fifth member of that class to leave the program.
Mells will be the 29th Oregon player to transfer since the 2022 regular season ended, joining receivers Dont’e Thornton, Isaiah Brevard, Caleb Chapman and Isaiah Crocker, running backs Byron Cardwell Jr. and Sean Dollars, quarterback Jay Butterfield, edge defenders Bradyn Swinson, Brandon Buckner, Jabril McNeill, Jaden Navarrette and Anthony Jones, offensive linemen Bram Walden and Dawson Jaramillo, linebackers Jackson LaDuke, Justin Flowe, Keith Brown and Harrison Taggart, tight end/outside linebacker Terrell Tilmon, safeties Jonathan Flowe and Trejon Williams, tight ends Moliki Matavao and Cam McCormick, defensive tackles Keanu Williams and Treven Ma’ae and cornerbacks Jalil Tucker, Avante Dickerson and Darren Barkins.
