Oregon State will have a presence during the final round of the NCAA women’s golf championship even though the Beavers failed to make the 54-hole cut.
Oregon State’s Chayse Gomez is tied for ninth after shooting a 2-under 70 Sunday at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale Arizona. Gomez, who is 4-under after opening the tournament with a pair of 71s, is six strokes behind third-round leader Catherine Park of USC.
Gomez is in position for the best NCAA tournament finish in OSU history. The record is 16th, set by Kathleen Takaishi in 1998. Former Beaver Mary Budke won an AIAW national title in 1973, before the NCAA began conducting women’s golf tournaments.
On a brutally windy day where no team broke par at Grayhawk, Oregon State shot a 14-over 302. The Beavers missed the cut by 11 strokes, tying for 22nd at 28-over 892.
Gomez was OSU’s standout, as she was one of only 15 players to break par Sunday. Gomez made birdies on three of her final 10 holes to finish at 2-under.
Gomez advances to the final round as one of the top nine individuals from teams that didn’t make the cut.
Oregon State’s counting scores were Danique Stokmans (76), Kelsey Webster (77) and Madde Sund (79). Amanda Minni, who shot a second-round 71, posted a non-counting 82.
Stanford leads the tournament at 13-under, seven shots ahead of Wake Forest and Texas. The top eight teams after Monday’s final round advance to match play. From the Pac-12, USC (fourth) and Arizona (seventh) are currently among the top eight.
Gomez is among four Pac-12 players among the top 10 after three rounds.
