Oregon State’s Kaylee Mitchell won her heat of the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday night, moving into Saturday’s final along with Beavers teammate Grace Fetherstonhaugh.
Running in the same heat as Mitchell at the championship meet in Austin, Texas, Fetherstonhaugh placed third to also automatically advance to the field of 12 for the steeple final, scheduled for Saturday night.
The OSU seniors were in the slower of the two heats, with Mitchell crossing in 9 minutes, 51.46 seconds and Fetherstonhaugh finishing in 9:52.02. Notre Dame’s Olivia Markezich won the other heat in 9:40.81.
Mitchell and Fetherstonhaugh are two of the Beavers’ three hopefuls at the NCAA meet as they look to bring home a women’s individual national championship in track and field for the first time since 1975. Oregon State’s Jade Whitfield is entered in the women’s discus finals, also slated for Saturday night.
