Portland State opens the 2023 season at Oregon and plays at UO again in 2026 and at Oregon State in 2025 and 2027. Bruce Barnum would like the Vikings to face the Ducks and Beavers in future spring games as well.
“All in 100%” Barnum told The Oregonian/OregonLive. “In my opinion, no reason not to.”
Oregon coach Dan Lanning said he’d be open to playing another team in UO’s future spring games.
The idea of spring games becoming inter-squad scrimmages has been floated for several offseasons to no avail but has garnered a lot of support this year after Division II approved a proposal for its football teams to scrimmage four-year schools starting in the spring of 2024.
Barnum said it would benefit fans, players, media and athletic departments.
“I think it’s custom made,” Barnum said. “Would add a cool cap to spring ball and something to celebrate sports wise after the Final Four push before NBA playoffs hit high gear.”
