Sotheby’s Hong Kong is holding an online sale dedicated to Moutai and whisky from now until 24 September 2021. The sale is led by the second release of Prima & Ultima, consigned directly from Diageo.
The latest Spirits sale of Sotheby’s in Hong Kong features a range of fine and rare Scotch, Japanese whisky and Moutai.
Leading the sale is the second release of Diageo’s Prima & Ultima, which comprises a collection of cask-strength whiskies from the company’s top distilleries, including the newly restored Brora. Curated by master blender Maureen Robinson, the malts highlight the broad and diverse range of the Diageo portfolio, including stock from closed distilleries, dating from 1974 through to 1995.
The collections were released last month via online registration, with set #1 held back for exclusive sale at the forthcoming Sotheby’s auction. Each whisky in the collection is accompanied by a 2cl miniature of the same whisky, along with eight bespoke glasses, unique to this set.
The winning bidder will also receive an invitation to join a tour led by Robinson at the recently restored Brora distillery in the Scottish Highlands for a day-long exploration of Scotch history. The visit will include warehouse tastings of historic Brora stocks and further cask samples from Diageo’s distilleries across Scotland.
The proceeds from this lot will be donated to leading humanitarian charity, CARE International. Funds from the auction will support CARE International UK’s work to empower women and their communities around the world through encouraging entrepreneurship, building livelihoods, improving access to education and healthcare, and responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Other highlights of the sale include an array of old and rare Japanese whisky including the Karuizawa Cask #8852 Streams of Time 1965. Bottled at an impressive 63.1% ABV in 2017 after more than 50 years of maturation, this is one of the oldest expressions of Karuizawa ever released and limited to just 150 bottles.
Also from the closed Karuizawa Distillery is the Karuizawa #8183 42 Year Old 1969, bottled from a single bourbon cask in 2012, as well as a number of whiskies from Suntory powerhouse brands Yamazaki and Hibiki. Exceptional Scotch from Macallan, Talisker, Mortlach and the legendary independent Italian bottler Samaroli is also available in the sale.
Last but not least, a rare vintage Kweichow Moutai, as well as full cases of the popular Chinese spirit, are on offer to cater to the interest of Asian consumers.
