I used to live in California, and I noticed that people there are pretty good at following the right-of-way rules at stop signs. It’s common knowledge that the person to the right has the right of way when two people arrive at an intersection at the same time. But I’ve noticed that people in Oregon don’t seem to know this rule. It might help if we include more obvious information about this in the driver training and driving tests.
Another thing I’ve noticed is that drivers in Portland are often reluctant to merge in the zipper pattern, which causes more traffic and delays on the roads. It would be great if we could educate people on how to merge properly, including using the zipper pattern.
As a person in this community who commutes downtown every day, I’m not sure who I should talk to about these issues. It would be helpful if the authorities could provide more information about how citizens can get involved in promoting road safety and making our streets safer for everyone.
