I was very disappointed in the opinion piece criticizing the new Ritz-Carlton hotel and condos, (“Opinion: The hole at the center of Portland’s Ritz-Carlton project,” April 5).
I don’t know if the writer was more resentful of the people purchasing units there or the fact that his beloved food trucks were no longer there. Yes, it is sad the food trucks are gone. One may have to walk a little further for a meal but that may not be a bad thing. If I could afford it, I might want to live at this project, too. But it doesn’t make me resentful; a little envious, maybe.
I can’t even imagine a name like Ritz-Carlton having lower-income housing. As for the architecture, I have been watching the construction for years also and find it to be quite a beautiful building.
The opinion piece was negative, but what about all the good things? Just think about how many jobs that it created for all the local contractors and construction workers, as well as all the service people after construction.
With the beating our city took from the riots and destruction, I feel this is a wonderful addition to our city.
