World record-holder, Olympic and world championships gold medalist Sifan Hassan did not disappoint Portland track fans Friday night at the Stumptown Twilight track meet.
In the 5,000-meter run, Hassan took the lead from the gun and like a metronome, clicked off steady paced laps en route to a time of 15 minutes, 13.41 seconds.
Hassan’s 2022 track debut at Jesuit High School’s Cronin Stadium, in preparation for the World Athletics Championships in Eugene that start July 15, puts her at No. 68 on the world list this year, according to World Athletics. However, considering that she essentially ran by herself as part of a championship preparation training routine, it is difficult to predict any upcoming results from her debut victory.
Former Oregon Ducks standout Susan Ejore won a competitive women’s 1,500 in 4:07.67. She was pushed by Hanna Green of Oregon Track Club Elite and former Grant High School competitor Ella Donaghu, currently with Union Athletics Club.
New Zealand Olympian Sam Tanner won the men’s high-performance 1,500 meters in 3:36.93. Tanner was followed closely by Thomas Ratcliffe of Bowerman Track Club and former Western Oregon University star David Ribich, who currently runs for Brooks Beasts.
Former Ducks star Charlie Hunter of Union Athletics Club easily won the 800 meters in 1:47.00. Cheering from the sideline was fellow UAC teammate Donavan Brazier, the 2019 world champion in the 800, who will be defending his world title next week in Eugene.
Former Ducks standout Sabrina Southerland of Oregon Track Club Elite won the women’s 800 in 2:01.53.
