Six Oregon athletes qualified to represent the United States on an international stage at the 2022 World Athletics U20 Championships after strong showings at the USATF U20 Outdoor Championships this week in Eugene.
On Saturday, Lake Oswego incoming junior Mia Brahe-Pedersen finished second in Saturday’s 200-meter dash, ending with a time of 22.98. Her mark is just milliseconds off the state record (22.95 set in 1968 by Churchill’s Margaret Johnson-Bailes).
Fellow Laker Kate Peters, an incoming senior, finished first in the women’s 3,000-meter race on Saturday with a time of 9:34.78.
Cascade alumna Emma Gates rounded out the Saturday finishers, placing second in the high jump. The future Arizona Wildcat finished second with a jump of five feet, 11.25 inches.
On Thursday, Crater incoming senior Tyrone Gorze finished first in the men’s 5,000-meter race with a time of 14:08.08.
On Friday, Brahe-Pedersen finished second in the women’s 100-meter dash. During the prelims, she finally broke the Oregon high school record for the 100, finishing with a time of 11.25. Also in the women’s 100, Lily Jones of Roosevelt finished sixth with a time of 11.37.
Sophia Beckmon placed second in the long jump with a jump of 20 feet, 0.5 inches. According to Scorebook Live, Beckmon will not be able to compete at the World Championships because she doesn’t have a passport.
The U20 World Championships will be from Aug. 2-7 in Cali, Colombia.
