Two teenagers and a third person police described as a juvenile have been accused of fleeing the scene of a shooting in Northeast Portland and hiding in a Laurelhurst neighborhood backyard.
Julius Whitehurst, 18, and an unidentified 15-year-old were detained Monday morning after police heard gunfire near Northeast 82nd Avenue and Fremont Street around 2:30 a.m.
Officers found a car nearby and attempted to stop it.
The car took off and police pursued the suspects until the driver crashed near Southeast 40th Avenue and East Burnside Street. Police said three suspects fled the car.
Officers set up a perimeter from Southeast Cesar E. Chavez Boulevard to 44th Avenue and East Burnside to Southeast Ash Street. Police used the Emergency Notification System to tell residents to stay in their homes.
The police bureau called out the SWAT team, and officers used drones to search the area. Police detained the three young people without incident.
Officers found no shooting victims in Northeast Portland but seized an AR-15 and .223 caliber bullet casings in the incident, according to a news release.
Whitehurst was booked into Multnomah County Detention Center on allegations of attempted murder, unlawful use of a weapon and unlawful possession of a firearm, police said.
The 15-year-old was booked into the Donald E. Long Juvenile Detention Center on accusations of attempted murder, attempting to elude police, reckless driving, reckless endangerment and unlawful use of a weapon.
Officers released the third person to relatives, police said. Officials did not release that person’s name, age or gender but called the person a juvenile.
