Trader Joe’s proposes new store in Tigard

National grocery retailer Trader Joe’s is considering a new store in Tigard, according to city planning documents.

City records show that a commercial building permit was issued on Tuesday to renovate the site of a former Albertsons at Tigard Towne Square on Southwest Durham Road and Pacific Highway.

The new store, at 16200 S.W. Pacific Highway, would be the chain’s 10th location in the Portland area after a new Southwest Portland store opened in October.

The company declined to confirm plans for a new Tigard store. “We consider many locations,” a spokesperson wrote in a statement.

The small-format grocery chain has over 500 stores nationwide and 13 locations in Oregon. It is known for its employees clad in Hawaiian shirts and its low-cost house brand products.

The 25,000-square-foot space identified in the permit application is owned by Helsin Holdings Inc., a commercial real estate developer based in Southern California. The company purchased the space after the Albertsons closed in 2015.
