The anticipated matchup between Portland Trail Blazers rookie Scoot Henderson and San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama never happened Sunday night because Henderson sat out with a sprained right shoulder.
Instead, the fans at the Thomas & Mack Center were treated to a bounce-back game for Wembanyama who scored 27 points with 12 rebounds after struggling in his summer debut on Friday against Charlotte when he made just 2 of 13 shots for nine points.
Nevertheless, while Wembanyama shined, the Blazers (1-1) controlled virtually the entire game and withstood a late San Antonio comeback to win 85-80 without Henderson, the No. 3 pick in the draft, and with Shaedon Sharpe playing poorly.
Sharpe scored just nine points on 4 of 18 shooting and also added eight rebonds and four assists.
Two of his field goals came on spectacular dunks. One occurred during a one-man fast break in the third quarter when he cocked the ball back and then slammed it through. The other dunk came after he received a pass on the left side of the key, took one dribble inside and then rose up and dunked over a defender.
The Blazers main scoring threat on this night was Michael Devoe, 23, who spent last season in the G League. He scored 29 points with five assists and hit a key three late in the game. Devoe made 10 of 17 field goals.
Blazers forward Jabari Walker scored 11 points with nine points. The Spurs (1-1) received 14 points from guard Blake Wesley.
Henderson is day to day, according to the Blazers.
JERAMI GRANT
The Blazers officially signed forward Jerami Grant to a five-year, $160 million contract on Sunday. Grant, along with guard Matisse Thybulle, will take part in a press conference on Monday to discuss their new contracts.
Thybulle, who was a restricted free agent, signed an offer sheet from Dallas worth $33 million over three years that the Blazers matched.
KEON JOHNSON
Guard Keon Johnson sat out with a dislocated finger he suffered Friday night against Houston. He is day-to-day for the rest of the summer schedule.
