With about 200 meters to go, the Class 5A boys 1,500 meter race morphed from a speed competition into something that looked a little bit more like a boxing match.
No fists were thrown. But Wilsonville’s Carter Cutting and Crater’s Tyrone Gorze left every ounce of themselves on the track at Hayward Field as they finished the race. Gorze tried to overtake the lead in the final bend. Cutting, who has seen this time and time again, didn’t allow it to happen.
On the final straightaway, Cutting took a lead that was too much for Gorze to make up as he won the event in three minutes, 47.18 seconds. The time is a new best in the state this season, is fifth in Oregon high school history and is third in the country this season.
