Spencer Scott went 2 for 3 and drove in two runs, and the Portland Pilots leaned on their pitching to pull off a second consecutive upset victory against No. 5 Texas A&M on Saturday in College Station, Texas.
Relievers Jacob Dobmeier and Peter Allegro combined for 4 1/3 shutout innings as the Pilots won 4-1 a day after beating the Aggies 10-3. Dobmeier (1-0) picked up the victory with 3 1/3 innings of work, while Allegro pitched the ninth and recorded his first save of the season.
UP starter Brock Gillis allowed one run on four hits with four strikeouts and five walks in 4 2/3 innings.
Portland’s Nich Klemp stayed hot at the plate with three hits, including a double, and Henry Muench went 2 for 4.
The Pilots (5-1) clinched the series victory, with the finale set for 11 a.m. Sunday. Portland never had beaten a top-five opponent before Friday, let alone won a series against a top-five team.
Texas A&M (3-3) dropped its third game in a row.
