The sun is starting to melt the remnants of Oregon’s record-breaking storm, but more snow is expected Saturday night.
The Portland metro area is expecting only a few inches, but areas along the Columbia River Gorge and the Cascades should plan for more significant snowfall. Several winter weather advisories are in effect through Sunday afternoon.
These are the forecasts for various regions of Oregon expecting snow over the weekend.
Portland metro area
Snow is expected to vary across the region, but forecasters are expecting half an inch to 2 inches in Portland Saturday night, according to Noah Alviz, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Portland.
Hillsboro and Beaverton, as well as areas closer to Milwaukee and Oregon City, likely won’t see much snow, if any, due to warmer southern winds, Alviz said. More snow is expected near the east and northern parts of the metro area.
As you move closer to Clark County, there may be 1-3 inches through the night, Alviz said.
The snow will likely shift to rain come early morning Sunday, and temperatures are expected to climb into the low 40s.
Oregon Cascades, Cascade foothills
Those traveling through Oregon’s northern Cascades should plan for heavy snow with around 7-16 inches overnight and winds as strong as 40 mph, according to a winter storm warning issued Saturday. The warning is in effect from midnight Saturday until 7 p.m. Sunday.
Avoid travel in this area if possible. Motorists should bring supplies with them in case of an emergency.
Areas in the Cascade foothills, including Estacada and Sandy, are expected to see 4-10 inches, making travel “very difficult.” Weather warnings in this region will lift at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Snowfall could range 6-12 inches in the southern Oregon Cascades and 3-8 in the Siskiyou Mountains.
Coast Range
Forecasters predict that areas along the Coast Range in northwest Oregon could see 2-6 inches of snow at higher elevations with winds as strong as 35 miles per hour. Areas near Vernonia and Frances, as well as Washington’s Willapa Hills, should prepare for slippery or icy roads, a weather advisory said.
The advisory goes into effect at 8 p.m. Saturday and ends at noon Sunday.
Columbia River Gorge
Around 2-4 inches could fall on the region around Hood River and along the central Columbia River Gorge. Roads will likely be slippery, with patches of blowing snow at night. Lows are expected to be in the upper 20s Saturday night, but temperatures will pick up into the high 30s during the day Sunday.
Areas around Corbett and Multnomah Falls could see 5-10 inches at higher elevations, with around 2-6 inches lower than 2,500 feet. Winter storm warnings along the gorge will lift by 1 p.m. Sunday.
