It’s a fact well acknowledged that servers and wait staff have to put up with a lot in the course of their jobs. One Hooters waitress has revealed the things she wishes customers would stop saying to her, and it’s eye-opening to say the least.
Ranging from comments about her appearance to urging her to smile more as she goes about her work, one Hooters employee told Insider all about the quips she is forced to contend with while at work.
Hooters is infamous for the uniforms it require its wait staff to wear, as well as the heavy emphasis it places on the looks of its employees.
The server told Insider that she commonly has comments directed at her such as “are you on the menu?”, as well as other overtly sexual remarks.
“Why aren’t you smiling” is reportedly another phrase that the Hooters Girls hear a lot.
“You’re actively working, running around doing something, going back and forth and someone will literally stop me and say, ‘Why aren’t you smiling? Just smile more. Aren’t you happy to be here?’” The waitress revealed to Insider.
She also revealed that she has been confronted with comments that are racist or play into the fetishisation of black women. “‘I love me a nice, dark feisty girl,’ fetish-y phrases, I’ll get those sometimes,” the waitress shared.
Having worked at Hooters for three years, the waitress revealed she can typically tell when someone isn’t going to tip, and it normally starts with them ordering a water.
She also tackled misconceptions surrounding Hooters venues. She says people often claim that Hooters is akin to a strip club, while others perpetuate the myth that “Hooters girls are dumb”.
“I have a master’s degree — this is my side job,” she pointed out. “My manager from my first store was getting her nursing degree while she was a Hooters Girl.”
Earlier this year, we reported on the news that Hooters had backtracked on its new staff uniforms after employees blasted them as “sexist”.
