The World Athletics Championships in Eugene have reached the midway point of their 10-day run, so it’s a good time to take a look at how athletes with Oregon and southwest Washington ties have fared so far in the competition, which is track and field’s premier event outside of the Olympics.
Ryan Crouser is the lone local athlete to have brought home a medal thus far, as the shot putter who was born in Boring and starred at Gresham’s Barlow High School won the gold on Sunday. But other athletes with Oregon ties have come close, from Grant Fisher’s fourth-place finish in the 10,000 meters to Evan Jager’s sixth-place finish in the steeplechase. Then there was Devon Allen’s heartbreaking disqualification in the 110-meter hurdles final.
Here’s a day-by-day and round-by-round recap of how local athletes have fared at Oregon22 so far, plus a complete look at how and when to watch the 15 athletes with ties to Oregon and southwest Washington who are still set to compete between Wednesday and Sunday in Eugene.
Note: This list assumes all the athletes will advance to the finals of their respective events. That isn’t likely to happen, but call us optimistic. We will update the list as the meet unfolds.

FRIDAY, JULY 15
Jillian Weir, Canada (former University of Oregon) in women’s hammer throw qualifying: Weir placed ninth in qualifying with a throw of 236 feet, 2 inches (71.98m) to move on to the final.
Dan Nehnevaj, USA (former Clark College, former Columbia River HS) in men’s 20k race walk final: Nehnevaj placed 43rd in the race, finishing in 1 hour, 43 minutes, 7 seconds.
Evan Jager, USA (Bowerman Track Club) in men’s 3,000 steeplechase heats: Jager finished second in his heat and advanced to Monday’s steeplechase final.
Jessica Hull, Australia (Union Athletics Club, former University of Oregon) in women’s 1,500 meters heats: Hull moved on to the semifinals, placing second in her heat in 4 minutes, 4.68 seconds.
Sinclaire Johnson, USA (Union Athletics Club) in women’s 1,500 meters heats: Johnson placed fourth to grab an automatic qualifying spot to the semifinals in a time of 4:07.68.
Ryan Crouser, USA (grew up in Oregon, former Barlow HS) in men’s shot put qualifying: Crouser needed just one attempt to clear the automatic qualifying line and advance to the shot put final on Sunday. His throw went 73 feet, 1¼ inches (22.28m) to lead the 12 qualifiers to the final.
SATURDAY, JULY 16
Grace Fetherstonhaugh, Canada (Oregon State University) in women’s 3,000 steeplechase heats: Fetherstonhaugh finished 13th in her heat, crossing in 9 minutes, 49.85 seconds. She did not advance to the final.
Courtney Frerichs, USA (Bowerman Track Club) in women’s 3,000 steeplechase heats: Frerichs took fourth in her heat, finishing in 9:17.91. That was fast enough to move her through as a time qualifier to the final.
Devon Allen, USA (former University of Oregon) in men’s 110 hurdles heats: He didn’t run a crisp race, but Devon Allen did enough to win the heat in 13.47 seconds and move on to the semifinals on Sunday. Allen said on a TV interview afterward that he just had to “knock the cobwebs off” after not racing in about three weeks since the USA championships.
Karissa Schweizer, USA (Bowerman Track Club) in women’s 10,000 meters final: Though she didn’t medal, Schweizer placed ninth in 30:18.05, a personal record by almost 30 seconds.
Kemba Nelson, Jamaica (University of Oregon) in women’s 100 meters heats: Nelson placed third in her heat, crossing in 11.10 seconds, to advance to the semifinals.
Johnny Gregorek, USA (former University of Oregon) in men’s 1,500 meters heats: Gregorek finished sixth in his heat to advance to the semifinals, with a time of 3:35.65.
Cooper Teare, USA (trains in Eugene, former University of Oregon) in men’s 1,500 meters heats: Teare placed 13th, crossing in 3:41.15, and did not advance to the semifinals. He said after the race that he had been dealing with a stress reaction in his left leg.
Josh Thompson, USA (Bowerman Track Club) in men’s 1,500 meters heats: Thompson finished second in his heat in a time of 3:39.10 to move on to the semifinals automatically.
Jessica Hull, Australia (Union Athletics Club) in women’s 1,500 meters semifinals: With a time of 4:01.81, Hull finished third in her heat to advance to the 1,500 final.
Sinclaire Johnson, USA (Union Athletics Club) in women’s 1,500 meters semifinals: Johnson took third in her heat, finishing in 4:04.51 to qualify for the final.
SUNDAY, JULY 17
Galen Rupp, USA (Portland resident, former University of Oregon, former Central Catholic HS) in men’s marathon final: Rupp stayed with the lead pack for much of the race before fading late and finishing in 19th place.
Jillian Weir, Canada (former University of Oregon) in women’s hammer throw final: Weir finished fifth in the hammer throw with a best toss of 237 feet, 6 inches (72.41m).
Grant Fisher, USA (Bowerman Track Club) in men’s 10,000 meters final: Fisher just missed on earning a medal, finishing fourth in 27 minutes, 28.14 seconds.
Mohammed Ahmed, Canada (Bowerman Track Club) in men’s 10,000 meters final: Ahmed took sixth in the 10,000, finishing in 27:30.27.
Sean McGorty, USA (Bowerman Track Club) in men’s 10,000 meters final: McGorty crossed the line in 12th place, with a time of 27:46.30.
Devon Allen, USA (former University of Oregon) in men’s 110 hurdles semifinals: Allen finished second in his heat, posting a time of 13.09 seconds, to qualify automatically for the final later Sunday.
Kemba Nelson, Jamaica (University of Oregon) in women’s 100 meters semifinals: Nelson crossed in sixth place, hitting the line in 11.25 seconds, and did not advance to the final.
Ryan Crouser, USA (grew up in Oregon, former Barlow HS) in men’s shot put final: Crouser dropped into second place in the competition when Joe Kovacs posted a toss of 75 feet, 1¼ inches (22.89m). But Crouser responded with a throw that sailed two inches farther, at 75-3¼, to win his first world championships gold medal.
Johnny Gregorek, USA (former University of Oregon) in men’s 1,500 meters semifinals: Gregorek finished eighth in his heat, hitting the line at 3:37.35. He did not advance to the final.
Josh Thompson, USA (Bowerman Track Club) in men’s 1,500 meters semifinals: Thompson sneaked into the men’s 1,500 final. He finished seventh in the faster of the two heats, crossing at 3:35.55, to claim the last of the two time-qualifying spots in the 12-man field for the final.
Devon Allen, USA (former University of Oregon) in men’s 110 hurdles final: It was devastation for Devon Allen on Sunday night. Allen was disqualified for a false start after he reacted faster than is allowable after the starting gun went off. Allen’s reaction time was measured at 0.099 seconds, while the allowable reaction time is 0.100 seconds or slower. In other words, Allen’s reaction time was one-thousandth of a second too fast. He was sent off the track, forced to sit out the final.
MONDAY, JULY 18
Jenna Prandini, USA (former University of Oregon) in women’s 200 meters heats: Prandini finished second in her heat in 22.38 seconds to move ahead to the semifinals.
Evan Jager, USA (Bowerman Track Club) in men’s 3,000 steeplechase final: Jager didn’t earn a medal but was the top American finisher, crossing in sixth place in a time of 8 minutes, 29.08 seconds.
Sinclaire Johnson, USA (Union Athletics Club) in women’s 1,500 meters final: Johnson ran a good race but just could not match the speed of the leaders, who took an early lead and never let up. Johnson finished sixth in 4:01.63.
Jessica Hull, Australia (Union Athletics Club) in women’s 1,500 meters final: Like Johnson, Hull never could reel in the leaders who rocketed ahead from the start. Hull crossed seventh in a time of 4:01.82.
TUESDAY, JULY 19
Jenna Prandini, USA (former University of Oregon) in women’s 200 meters semifinals: Prandini posted a time of 22.08 seconds to finish fourth in her heat. That was not good enough to move her through to the final.
Josh Thompson, USA (Bowerman Track Club) in men’s 1,500 meters final: Thompson placed 12th in the 1,500 final, hitting the finish line at 3 minutes, 35.57 seconds.
