When Lake Oswego’s Mia Brahe-Pedersen was awarded her gold medal after finishing first in the girls 100-meter dash at Nike Outdoor Nationals on Friday, fans from all around Hayward Field cheered for the 11.11 second time that won the race.
The loudest cheers, though, came from the person directly to Brahe-Pedersen’s left. Sophia Beckmon, of Oregon City, finished second in 11.35. Brahe-Pedersen and Beckmon have to compete against each other in the sprints and the relay races regularly, but the two are also best friends.
