If anyone should be denied Communion, it is Portland Archbishop Alexander Sample for ignoring the Vatican’s instructions to not deny Communion to Catholic politicians who simply support the right to choose (“Portland archbishop agrees Nancy Pelosi should be barred from Communion due to Roe v. Wade support,” May 29). Sample knows this is politicization, yet chooses to engage in what Pope Francis has warned against. The priests, bishops and archbishops on up do not control an individual’s conscience and free will. House Speaker Pelosi has done much to exemplify what the Church desires – one marriage, children and living life with compassion, which is more than the Catholic hierarchy has done for centuries, covering over the abuse the Church did to its most vulnerable.
