The Portland area could see triple-digit temperatures Sunday.
The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory, which means temperatures could go as high as 102 degrees. The advisory will remain in effect through Monday at 10 p.m.
Although not as hot as last year, when the Pacific Northwest experienced the first day of a deadly three-day heat dome, Sunday’s temperatures could be dangerous for vulnerable Oregonians.
The weather service cautions people to drink lots of water, stay out of the direct sun and check on neighbors and relatives. Never leave young children or pets alone in hot cars. And be extra careful if the hot weather calls you to cool water. River drownings happen when cold water temperatures in the 50s shock unsuspecting swimmers.
Multnomah County has not opened any cooling shelters for Sunday. But it has extended the hours at three of its library branches. The Holgate, Gresham and Central libraries will be open until 8 p.m.
Washington County lists places to stay cool on its website, as does Clackamas County.
