Emmerdale’s Woolpack is the cheapest pub in TV’s top soaps, while regulars at the Queen Victoria in Eastenders pay most for a pint.
A pint of standard lager in an East End of London community wet-led pub like the Queen Vic costs an average £3.52—64 pence more than the £2.88 average for Yorkshire Dales village pubs like the Woolpack, according to new research from CGA that maps the locals of the UK’s most popular soaps on its Trading Index.
The data shows that drinkers in the Rovers Return Inn on Coronation Street would expect to pay £3.28, while regulars at the Dog in the Pond in Hollyoaks would pay £3.40. The bar in the Doctors series—which fits CGA’s category of Birmingham suburban wine bars—might pay even more for a pint of lager, at an average of £3.92.
Those in the category of pubs like the Queen Vic might also expect to pay £6.48 for a large glass of white wine, whereas drinkers at the Woolpack would pay £4.80 and those visiting the Rovers Return would part with £5.73.
Regular measures of gin would cost £4.37 in the Queen Vic, but only £3.19 at the Woolpack and £3.66 at the Rovers Return.
“It’s fascinating to see how much our favourite soap characters are paying when they visit the UK’s most familiar locals,” said CGA client director Andy Dean, reminding how “the price that drinkers are willing to pay can vary substantially from region to region, town to town and even street to street.”
The Queen Vic, the local pub in the UK soap EastEnders, was also previously named in a study by Security company ADT as the most dangerous and oddly indestructable business in all of Britain’s ‘Soapland’.
