Literary Arts announced the 2023 Oregon Book Awards winners Monday and those winners included a former Oregonian reporter, Casey Parks.
According to a press release sent out by the organization, a panel of out-of-state judges selected 34 finalists and seven winners out of 202 titles. Those winners were announced at Portland Center Stage at The Armory on Monday.
Here are the winners:
Ken Kesey Award for Fiction: Sindya Bhanoo of Corvallis
Bhanoo won for “Seeking Fortune Elsewhere: Stories,” published by Catapult.
The category was judged by Zinzi Clemmons, Jonathan Dee and Shruti Swamy.
Stafford/Hall Award for Poetry: Eric Tran of Portland
Tran won for ”Mouth, Sugar, and Smoke,” published by Diode Editions.
The category was judged by Chen Chen, Lisa Olstein and Matthew Olzmann.
Angus L. Bowmer Award for Drama: Sara Jean Accuardi of Portland
Accuardi won for “The Storyteller.”
The category was judged by France-Luce Benson, Colette Freedman and Amina Henry.
Frances Fuller Victor Award for General Nonfiction: Lauren Kessler of Eugene
Kessler won for ”Free: Two Years, Six Lives, and the Long Journey Home,” published by Sourcebooks.
The category was judged by Richard Panek, Kim Todd and Neal Thompson.
Sarah Winnemucca Award for Creative Nonfiction: Casey Parks of Portland
Parks won for ”Diary of a Misfit: A Memoir and a Mystery,” published by Alfred A. Knopf.
The category was judged by Sloane Crosley, Christa Parravani and Mychal Denzel Smith.
Leslie Bradshaw Award for Young Adult and Middle Grade Literature: Waka T. Brown of West Linn
Brown won for ”Dream, Annie, Dream,” published by HarperCollins/Quill Tree Books.
The category was judged by Mary Cronk Farrell, T. P. Jagger and Alex Sanchez.
Eloise Jarvis McGraw Award for Children’s Literature: Dane Liu of Portland
Liu won for “Friends Are Friends, Forever,” published by Henry Holt and Company.
The category was judged by Erik Brooks, Carole Lindstrom and Cathryn Mercier.
