At least 7 people were killed and multiple others injured after two semi-trucks and a car crashed on Interstate 5 in Marion County Thursday afternoon, Oregon State Police said.
The crash was reported at 2:05 p.m. in the northbound lane of the interstate near the Santiam Rest Area, about 10 miles north of Albany, state police said.
Police did not identify the seven people who died. The cause of the crash is under investigation, police said.
Oregon State Police said there would be “significant delays” in the interstate’s northbound lanes. Southbound traffic may also be delayed, the agency said in a statement Thursday afternoon.
People should avoid I-5 if possible.
Northbound traffic will be detoured at exit 238 to the Jefferson Highway, according to the Oregon Department of Transportation.
This is one of the deadliest crashes in Oregon in recent years. A fatal crash in Harney County in August 2018 killed eight people, said Don Hamilton, a spokesperson for Oregon Department of Transportation.
