One of the early favorites to compete in the Class 6A state championship baseball game has been taken down, as No. 18 Lake Oswego upset No. 2 Jesuit 5-1 on Wednesday afternoon.
Blaise Heher was the second-round hero for the Lakers, who pitched a complete game and had three RBIs.
The Lakers will play at No. 7 Clackamas in the quarterfinals.
Lake Oswego’s win was hardly the only upset of the day. No. 21 Sheldon traveled to McMinnville and stunned the No. 5 Grizzlies 4-3. The Irish will be at No. 4 West Linn in the quarterfinals.
Canby, the 14th ranked team in the baseball state tournament, ended No. 3 South Medford’s season on Wednesday in a 4-2 game. The Cougars have struggled with consistency all season, and are now on a six-game winning streak. They play at No. 6 Mountainside in the quarterfinals.
On the softball side, there was only one upset in the second round, with No. 27 West Linn beating Tualatin 5-3 in 10 innings.
Top-seeded Tigard’s defense looked strong on Wednesday, but the Tigers came out with a close 2-0 win over South Salem. No. 2 Bend picked up a 6-2 win over Mountainside. The quarterfinals will see Tigard take on Newberg and Bend playing McMinnville in two hotly-anticipated games.
Sheldon, the fifth-ranked team, looked very strong in a three-inning 16-1 win over Lake Oswego.
The state quarterfinals will be played on Friday.
