Traditionally considered the highest honor in theater, the Tony Awards return on Sunday, in a ceremony hosted by Ariana DeBose, fresh from her Oscar win for her supporting role in Steven Spielberg’s remake of “West Side Story.” The 75th annual Tony Awards will be telecast live across the country, for the first time, which means viewers in the Pacific Time Zone can see, in real time, which productions and performers will take home trophies.
(No cable? You can live stream the 75th annual Tony Awards show at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET Sunday, June 12 on Paramount Plus, which offers a free trial; and on fubo TV, which offers a free trial.)
That’s particularly relevant this year, because the 2022 Tony Awards nominees include people with connections to Oregon. Corey Brunish, active in the Portland performing arts scene for several years, has picked up his 12th Tony nomination, as one of the producers of Stephen Sondheim’s “Company,” which, among other nods, is nominated as best revival of a musical. Brunish has also been among the producers of such previous Tony winners as “Once On This Island,” “Porgy and Bess,” and “Pippin.”
Also earning Tony recognition is Shoshana Bean, nominated in the category of best performance by an actress in a featured role in a musical, for her work in “Mr. Saturday Night.’ In the musical comedy, adapted from the movie of the same name, Bean plays the daughter of Buddy Young, Jr., the veteran comic played by Billy Crystal .
Bean, a graduate of Beaverton High School in 1995, has appeared on Broadway in such hits as “Wicked” and “Waitress.” She also performs as a singer, and has recorded several albums and EPs.
Before the Tony Awards broadcast on CBS and Paramount Plus, viewers can watch a streaming-only special, “The Tony Awards: Act One,” which begins at 4 p.m. PT/7 p.m. ET. Darren Criss and Julianne Hough will host. The hour-long special streams on Paramount Plus.
Following the “Act One” special, the 75th annual Tony Awards show begins at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET on CBS, and streaming live on Paramount Plus and fubo TV.
