Texas A&M claimed the first spot in this year’s College World Series by beating Louisville 4-3 Saturday in the College Station (Texas) Super Regional.
The No. 5 seed Aggies swept the best-of-three series after beating the No. 12 seed Cardinals 5-4 on Friday.
Elsewhere in NCAA baseball super regionals, Tennessee, Virginia Tech and Texas got even. And in all four of the series that played Game 1s on Saturday, the visiting team won.
The top-seeded Volunteers blew out Notre Dame 12-4 to even the Knoxville Super Regional at 1-1. Tennessee belted four home runs in an eight-run fifth inning and rolled from there.
No. 9 seed Texas tied up its series against No. 8 East Carolina after a drama-filled ninth in Greenville, North Carolina. First, the Pirates’ Jacob Starling hit a solo homer in the top of the inning to tie the game at 8-8. Then, with the bases loaded and two outs in the Longhorns’ half of the ninth, Dylan Campbell came through with a single down the right-field line as Texas walked it off for a 9-8 win to force Game 3 on Sunday.
Nick Biddison homered twice for Virginia Tech as the No. 4 seed Hokies blasted five homers in a 14-8 win over Oklahoma that evened their super regional in Blacksburg, Virginia.
And the four road teams playing in Game 1 each picked up wins: Arkansas got past No. 10 North Carolina 4-1 in Chapel Hill; Ole Miss blanked No. 11 Southern Miss 10-0 in Hattiesburg; No. 14 Auburn held off No. 3 Oregon State 7-5 in Corvallis; and UConn escaped No. 2 Stanford’s late rally for a 13-12 victory at Stanford.
Sunday brings seven super regional matchups, with three decisive Game 3s and four Game 2s.
