Oregon City incoming senior Sophia Beckmon already holds the title on best long jumper in Oregon history. Her personal best mark of 20 feet, eight inches is already a state record and is 10 inches farther than anyone else.
On Friday, Beckmon showcased her skills on a national level with a second-place finish at the 2022 USATF Outdoor Championships. Beckmon’s first jump of the day was 20 feet, 0.5 inches, good enough for the silver medal at the championship meet at Hayward Field.
The championship was won by India Alix, out of Houston, Texas.
In the women’s 100-meter hurdles, Oregon City alumna Harley Daniel finished fourth in her heat with a time of 13.95 seconds. The time was not enough to qualify for the finals, but it was a new personal best for the future Utah Ute and the first time she has dipped below 14 seconds.
The Oregon state record in the girls 100-meter hurdles is 13.57 and was set by Lincoln’s Bianca Mathabane in 2006.
The women’s 100-meter hurdles was won by Jalaysiya Smith, an incoming sophomore at USC.
The USATF U20 Outdoor Championships will continue through Saturday. On Saturday, Brahe-Pedersen and Jones are scheduled to compete one more time in the women’s 200-meter dash. Prelims for that race start at 2:34 p.m. with the finals set for 4:53 p.m.
Cascade’s Emma Gates will be competing in the women’s high jump, which will start at 4:15 p.m.
