Jamar Summerfield grew up near Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School in Northeast Portland and fondly recalls walking along Martin Luther King Boulevard as a kid. Roughly 40 years later, he returned to the school to meet up with friends and relatives at the Good in the Hood multicultural festival.
“I wish it could be every weekend,” Summerfield said. “When I see my people here, it just fills me with energy – to see so many Black and African American people coming together as a community.”
