It was far too easy for Syndey McLaughlin in one of the most highly anticipated races of the World Athletics Championships.
McLaughlin delivered an epic record-breaking performance the sport of track and field has never seen in the women’s 400-meter hurdle finals Friday evening at Hayfield Field.
McLaughlin finished the race in a world record time of 50.68 seconds, breaking her own previous record of 51.41 seconds that she set at the 2022 U.S. Track and Field Outdoor Championships in June.
It was another gold medal added to the 22-year-old star’s collection of track accomplishments. She became the second-youngest track and field athlete in history to own the three biggest accolades in an individual event.
The reaction to McLaughlin’s record-setting performance poured in from around the sports world on social media congratulating her on the historic feat:
She’s just special!!! @GoSydGo In a class of her own💛

Sydney McLaughlin’s time there — 50.68 — would’ve been good enough for 7th place in the women’s 400-meter final earlier tonight.
And she did it while jumping over 10 hurdles!

Sydney McLaughlin takes .73 of a second (!!!) off her own world record to win the 2022 world title in the 400m hurdles.
Quite simply one of the greatest performances in the history of track & field.
