But R&D Philadelphia wanted to make an even more comforting cold-weather version, not only switching out scotch with reposado and mezcal but turning the modern classic variation into a hot cocktail. “The temperature brings all of the aromatics of the smoke, agave, and rich honey to your nose,” says Hot Oaxacan Penicillin creator Resa Mueller.
