It’s the first game of the Sanderson Ford College Baseball Classic, a four-team tournament hosted by the Beavers. Minnesota and UC Santa Barbara also are in the field.

This and that: Sellers transferred from Lewis-Clark State College in the offseason and is making his first career start for the Beavers. The 6-foot-2 right-hander went 14-0 with a 1.98 ERA and 140 strikeouts in 109 innings last season, when he led the NAIA in wins and set a single-season school record in strikeouts. … The Beavers return just three players who started in the final game of the 2022 season: Garret Forrester (first base), Travis Bazzana (second base) and Kyle Dernedde (shortstop). … Preseason All-American pitcher Ben Ferrer, a versatile right-hander who is expected to play an important role, is out indefinitely with mononucleosis. He did not make the trip to Arizona. … Oregon State boasts a 16-4 all-time record vs. New Mexico, including a 5-0 mark under coach coach Mitch Canham. The Beavers have outscored the Lobos 64-11 in the five wins. … Canham needs 10 victories to reach 100 at Oregon State. … The Beavers are 82-31 all-time on opening day and have won 12 of their last 13 openers. The only loss came in a 3-2 defeat to Kansas State in 2021. … This is the ninth consecutive season Oregon State has opened with a tournament in Surprise. They are 57-15 in those games.
