The producers of the 2023 Oscars ceremony are hoping for a show that represents a return to normal, which also means viewers can expect to see stars showing up on the red carpet before the 95th annual Academy Awards ceremony. Early red carpet coverage begins starting at 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET with a live broadcast on ABC, but continues through the day.

This year will bring one pre-show change, however, in that the carpet will be “champagne”-colored, not crimson. The red carpet tradition dates back to 1961, as PBS reports, when “The Apartment” won best picture, Burt Lancaster and Elizabeth Taylor took best lead acting honors, and Bob Hope hosted. Viewers didn’t see the color of the carpet, however, until 1966, the first year the ceremony was televised in color.
Since then, the red carpet coverage, with celebrities showing off elaborate gowns, borrowed jewels and outfits ranging from chic to freaky, has become an awards show ritual. In 2023, ABC and E! are once again going all-in on red — OK, OK, champagne — carpet coverage. Here are highlights.
