John Karl Scholz will be the next president of the University of Oregon, trustees decided on Monday.
Scholz, provost at the University of Wisconsin, Madison replaces seven-year president Michael Schill, who left the university last year to become president of Northwestern University in Illinois. Biologist and former provost Patrick Phillips has served as interim president since August as the board conducted its presidential search.
All three of Oregon’s largest universities have appointed new presidents in the past year. Unlike Oregon State University and Portland State University, the University of Oregon conducted its search behind closed doors, keeping its finalist candidates hidden from the campus community and general public before Monday’s announcement.
